Today marked the first day of a career in the construction industry for five QBuild apprentices and trainees from the Gold Coast region.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today welcomed the new starters to QBuild in Southport.

"These young people are part of an overall group of 100 apprentices and trainees who have been successful in joining QBuild's 2005 intake across the State," Mr Lawlor said.

"Southport is taking on an apprentice painter, two plumbers and an electrotechnology (systems electrician).

"In addition, a school-based carpenter has now graduated and will continue with QBuild as a full-time apprentice."

Mr Schwarten said the full group of 100 had been selected from almost 1,000 applicants vying for positions available throughout Queensland.

"They've had tough competition to make it this far," Mr Schwarten said.

"QBuild's has a strong reputation for excellence in training apprentices, and the apprenticeship program is a real investment in the future of our state's building industry.

"The skills they will gain as they progress in their apprenticeships will give them a head start, equipping them with life-long trade skills that will enhance their future career prospects."

The full 2005 QBuild intake includes 64 new full-time apprentices, 10 school-based apprentices, two horticultural trainees and three construction worker trainees.

First on the agenda, all apprentices and trainees are commencing safety training and being provided with work-related equipment before they start learning on-site.
