After careful consideration of any potential impact on the region's water security, the Queensland Water Commission will provide for a Wet Weekend on the Gold Coast, to be held on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th of January.
In addition the Commission has advised it will allow the Gold Coast City Council to turn beach showers back on.
This will commence on the same day as the Wet Weekend and will remain in place until further notice.
"This is a responsible decision based on analysis showing there will be no impact on the water supply security for South East Queensland," said Queensland Water Commission CEO John Bradley.
"While Hinze Dam is still overflowing this is a chance for people on the Gold Coast to use some of that water outside in a responsible way and wash their cars.
"This decision is not designed to mitigate any potential flood risk, which remains the responsibility of Gold Coast Water and, if needed, is best addressed through managed releases from Hinze Dam as part of its normal operation."
During the Wet Weekend residents will be able to:
• Wash their cars • Wash houses and external hard surfaces such as drive ways
"While people can also water their gardens on the Wet Weekend, with the rain we've had there's really no need for this," said Mr Bradley
"We're appealing for people to still use water responsibly and keep in mind that two hours of watering with a hose will use up to 2400 litres of water, which would equate to an extra 25 litres on a household's daily water use for the quarter."
The Queensland Water Commission urges Gold Coast residents to retain their focus on meeting Target 140 outside of the Wet Weekend.
Except for the Wet Weekend and beach showers, Level 6 restrictions remain in place across South East Queensland including the Gold Coast.
"We are still in the most dire water supply situation of any major metropolitan region in Australia, with our main supply, the Wivenhoe Dam system, still at just 27 percent," said Mr Bradley.
"The water in Hinze Dam will help ease this burden from March, when a pipeline to Logan is finished and the larger Southern Regional Water Pipeline will be complete in November."
