The Gold Coast is set to have another nine units of affordable housing with construction underway on a new development in Southport. Community Services and Housing Minister Karen Struthers and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor inspected work at the George Street site today.
The Minister was on the Gold Coast with Premier Anna Bligh, her Cabinet Ministers and heads of Government Departments for Community Cabinet – a two-day event and the 15th to be held by the Bligh Government.
“Decision-making in George Street, Brisbane has meant action in George Street, Southport, with the development of these nine self-contained units,” Ms Struthers said. nine self-contained units,” Ms Struthers said. The development is part of a State Government funding package of $20 million for the Gold Coast Housing Company to build and manage affordable housing projects in the region.
“The Gold Coast Housing Company is an independent not-for-profit organisation with an excellent track record of managing 270 tenancies in the region,” she said.
Mr Lawlor said that when the units are completed in February next year, they will provide much-needed affordable accommodation for Gold Coast residents.
“There’s a high level of demand for suitable accommodation for single people and couples on the Gold Coast,” he said. “Residents will be close to support networks and services such as transport, shops and medical centres.”
Ms Struthers said the development was an example of the many ways the Queensland Government is taking action on jobs and housing affordability.
“Not only will this development provide homes for people who rely on affordable housing, it will provide jobs for local workers in the building industry,” she said.
The State Government has spent more than $92 million on housing and housing-related services on the Gold Coast since 1998.
