Awards reward efforts to make workplaces safer in Southport |

Businesses in the Southport area who are leading the way in making their workplaces safer are being urged to submit entries for this year’s Work Safe Awards.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the awards, run by the State Government, recognise and reward innovative ideas, leadership and commitment to workplace health and safety.
“The government is committed to making our workplaces among the safest in the world and that workers get home safe to their families and loved ones each day,” he said.
“I urge companies and individuals leading the way in injury prevention and safety at work to take advantage of this opportunity to be recognised for their commitment to excellence in workplace health and safety.
“These awards are open to all Queensland organisations and individuals, with $5000 in prize money up for grabs for entrants to put towards a health and safety initiative in their workplace.
“Promoting workplace health and safety is vital to cutting the Queensland workplace injury and fatality toll,” he said.
Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick said 113 workers died on the job in Queensland in 2008-09 and more than 10,800 workplace safety issues were raised during 2009.
“The 95,500 workers’ compensation claims made during 2008-09 indicate that many workers spent time in a hospital or didn’t make it home to their families and loved ones because of workplace safety incidents.
“The Work Safe awards recognise some of Queensland’s safest businesses and are a great opportunity for workplaces to showcase their safety initiatives and be proud of their achievements,” he said.
The awards program has five categories including: best solution to an identified health and safety issue; best individual contribution to workplace health and safety; and best solution to an identified electrical issue.
Nominations close on 9 July 2010 and the winners will be announced on 26 October 2010 during Safe Work Australia Week (24–30 October 2010) at an awards ceremony.
