In a major show of confidence in Queensland’s tourism industry Thai Airways is set to reinstate direct flights between Bangkok and Brisbane.
Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said Thai Airways, the only airline to fly between Thailand and Queensland, this week reinstated five direct flights per week.
“Thai Airways ceased direct flights from Bangkok to Brisbane in June 2007 when the airline decided to fly inbound to Sydney and then on to Brisbane,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Thai Airways is a major international player with extensive flight coverage across Continental Europe, the UK, China, Japan, India and South East Asia so it is fantastic news that they are reinstating these flights.
“The first three flights into Brisbane are fully booked and many of these passengers are international visitors.
“As Bangkok is a major hub out of Europe, the flights give travellers the opportunity to fly straight to Queensland without transiting through Sydney or Melbourne.”
Mr Lawlor said other Queensland destinations could also expect to benefit as the option of flying direct into Queensland offered visitors more time to spend in other parts of the state.
Thai Airways General Manager Queensland Suttichoke Rodleechit said in order to serve the travelling demands of the International and Australian market, the airline would adjust the flight schedule between Brisbane and Bangkok with five non-stop return flights each week.
"These non-stop flights between Bangkok and Queensland will provide more convenient connections to and from Europe and Asia," he said.
"The improved schedule is designed to increase tourism between the two destinations." Last changed: Nov 03 2009 at 10:22 AM
