State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers across the State are using SES Week (7–15 November) to remind residents to be prepared for the summer storm and cyclone season. Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said people needed to be aware of the danger of cyclones and severe storms, which threaten Queensland every year. “Many people who are new to Queensland may not be aware of the serious effects cyclones can have, particularly during the warmer months,” Mr Lawlor said. “SES volunteers work around the clock to assist those who have been affected by severe weather events and this SES Week Queenslanders are encouraged to assist our volunteers by ensuring they take the necessary steps to prepare their homes for storm and cyclone season.” Executive Director of Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) Frank Pagano said Queenslanders must be prepared and have an emergency plan in place well before the cyclone season strikes, and that there were a number of simple steps people should follow to maximise their safety. “Before storm and cyclone season, people should check that their home insurance is current, tidy up the yard and clean out gutters,” Mr Pagano said. “When a storm or cyclone approaches, people should secure outdoor furniture, windows and doors, shelter vehicles, disconnect electrical items and ensure their pets are safe and secure. “During a storm or cyclone, seek shelter in a solid section of a building, such as a hallway or internal room, and once it has passed, continue listening to your local radio station for advice.” For assistance from the SES during a flood, storm or cyclone emergency, people should call 132 500. In a life threatening emergency people should call triple zero (000). Queensland is home to more than 6,500 SES volunteers who last financial year committed approximately 110,000 operational hours to the frontline. SES Week is a valuable opportunity for the local community to thank SES volunteers across the State and learn about the vital role volunteers play within the community. Queensland SES Week is proudly supported by NRMA insurance as the major sponsor of the Queensland State Emergency Service.
