A Queensland Holiday bidding war will erupt when Tourism Queensland’s 2009 Ultimate Auctions campaign starts at 3pm on Monday 20 July, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said.
Mr Lawlor said Ultimate Auctions promoted a unique range of Queensland holiday experiences, packages and accommodation through an eBay-style platform, with bidding starting at $1 for all deals.
“Products are on offer are from right across Queensland ensure operators throughout the state receive the maximum benefit from this unique initiative.
“As well as some great holiday destinations like Fraser Island and Port Douglas, this year people can bid for the chance to be a koala keeper for a day or to fly a Boeing 737 flight simulator.
“Biddings starts as low as $1, but the competition can mean that some products end up selling for top dollar.
“But don’t worry if you miss out, all bidders will be given the opportunity to purchase the product at the regular retail price following the auction.”
Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said the user-friendly Ultimate Auctions site was modelled on the popular eBay platform, so it was familiar to a wide range of people and easy to use.
“By tapping into the popularity of eBay-style shopping and increased usage of the internet to book holidays, Ultimate Auctions presents a highly-accessible alternative for Queensland tourism operators to sell their products,” Mr Hayes said.
“Tourism Queensland is focused on hard-hitting tactical marketing strategies which involve operators from around Queensland, including those involved with the Ultimate Auctions.”
Mr Lawlor said more than 16 million domestic overnight visitors came to Queensland in the 12 months to March 2009, injecting $11.8 billion into the economy and supporting 84,500 Queensland jobs.
“The Queensland Government, through Tourism Queensland, will continue to work on innovative ideas such as Ultimate Auctions, to ensure the future of Queensland’s tourism industry remains bright.”
