Bligh Government to honour sports volunteers |

State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor MP has today called on local sport and recreation clubs to nominate volunteers for their tireless efforts. Mr Lawlor said the Bligh Government was honouring the outstanding work of Queenslanders at the Valuing Volunteers in Sport and Recreation Award ceremony. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community and nearly all sport and recreation clubs would not be able to survive without them,” he/she said “These awards provide us with the opportunity to convey our heartfelt thanks to people who make a difference across my electorate, and I urge everyone to get their nominations in by 10 May.” Mr Lawlor said a volunteer's contribution to the community often goes unrecognised.
"They are the coaches, board members, time keepers, officials and first aid officers,” Mr Lawlor said. “They work in our canteens on match days, run fundraisers for grass roots sport and devote hours of their own time to improve sport and recreation opportunities for all Queenslanders. “They also have a huge impact on the Queensland economy. In 2006, it was estimated that volunteers contributed $13.4 billion.” Sport Minister Phil Reeves said Queensland had the highest rate of volunteers in the country. "38 per cent of our population participate in volunteer work – with the highest proportion working with sport and recreation organisations,” Mr Reeves said.
"Our volunteers go above and beyond to support and develop the clubs they love.
"Some have applied their knowledge in fields of personal expertise to ensure continued growth, while others have committed years of their lives to raising funds for their organisations.
"These people are an inspiration to all of us and highlight the great work being achieved behind the scenes. “Volunteers help to ensure the people of Queensland continue to live active, healthy lifestyles through sport and recreation, and help the Bligh Government work towards its goal of making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people. “The Government is committed to supporting volunteers under our Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland initiative. “We want to boost the number of volunteers in local communities by 50 per cent by 2020.” Last changed: Apr 30 2010 at 2:49 PM
