The Ministerial Diary

After my successful re-election campaign, I will return for a fourth term as the Member for Southport. Along with this important role I have been appointed as the new Minister of Tourism and Fair Trading. This position also includes the Racing and Liquor Licensing portfolios. During my time as Minister I will be visiting tourism icons all over Queensland and this page will keep track of my work. I encourage everyone to follow my travels as the Minister by reading below my entries into the Minister's Diary where I will write about my latest experiences. Peter Lawlor.
As the Minister responsible for Fair Trading it is my duty to urge parents to check their window blinds and curtains to ensure they are safe for children. Since 1991 more than 170 children have died from injuries associated with curtain and blind cords in the United States and 12 children in Australia have been unintentionally strangled because of blind cords. In Queensland there are strict mandatory safety standards for window covering cords to minimise the risk of children becoming strangled, however, as these standards were introduced in 2006 there would be hundreds of thousands of potentially unsafe blinds still in people's homes. July 22nd is blind cord safety day and this year the Office of Fair Trading is giving away free safety toggles to attach to blinds to minimise risk of injury and even death to children, for information contact 13 13 04 or visit www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au Last changed: Jul 22 2009 at 11:35 AM
