Queenslanders are being encouraged to explore the islands of the Southern Great Barrier Reef and the seaside villages and cities of central Queensland in a new tourism campaign, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said today.

The Tourism Queensland campaign, in partnership with Capricorn Tourism, Gladstone Area Promotion and Development, Bundaberg and North Burnett Region Tourism, is in market now until late June.

“Under the tagline ‘Where the walks are out of the ordinary’ the online and print campaign is running in Brisbane and throughout regional Queensland to stimulate interest in the diversity and distinctiveness of central Queensland coastal experiences,” he said.

Experiences promoted through the campaign included:
• witnessing turtle egg-laying
• snorkelling off southern Great Barrier Reef island
• digging in the Sapphire Gemfields
• touring and tasting Bundaberg Rum or ginger beer direct from the distillery
• Staying in a fully-restored colonial Bed & Breakfast or on a working cattle ranch
• Exploring Carnarvon Gorge National Park
• Kayaking in the town inlet of 1770
• Horse riding.

“In the current climate, now is the time to concentrate our efforts on communicating the ‘holiday at home’ message by highlighting a wide range of affordable travel options for Australians,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The campaign offers some great short-break holiday itineraries, from long weekends to 10-day trips, in a variety of island, coastal, regional or rural locations.

“Central Queensland tourism operators were offered a coordinated and cost-effective opportunity to promote their products through the campaign and they have worked together to provide some fantastic value-added holiday deals.

“More than 1.5 million domestic visitors travelled to Bundaberg, Gladstone or central Queensland in 2008, supporting 7800 Queensland jobs.”

The campaign is expected to reach more than 600,000 people. To view the campaign visit www.southernbarrierreef.com.au
