Member for Southport today urged Queenslanders to sign up for the ClimateSmart Home Service to save money, energy and the planet.
“By installing energy efficient devices the service will help households reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Lawlor said.
Mr Lawlor said the household energy efficiency program was the largest scheme of its kind in the country and would deliver savings of up to $250 a year on household energy bills.
“The average Queensland household generates almost 14 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year and our per capita carbon footprint is larger than the rest of the world’s,” he said.
“As of 1 January, qualified electricians will start visiting registered Queensland households to conduct energy audits and provide the information and equipment people need to save energy and money.
“The energy audits are valued at $450, but residents will pay only $50 for the service, which will save households up to $250 every year through energy savings.
“It will also deliver a reduction in Queensland’s annual greenhouse gas emissions of up to 5.3 million tonnes – that’s the equivalent of taking 1.2 million cars off the road.
“This will go a long way to achieving the Government’s Q2 target to reduce the State’s carbon footprint by a third by 2020 and will help Queenslanders save money, energy and the environment,” he said.
Through the ClimateSmart Home Service, households will receive:
• A home energy audit conducted by a licensed electrician and a customised plan on how to save energy and money;
• An energy monitor to show how much energy is being used throughout the day;
• A water efficient showerhead supplied and installed to reduce water consumption and significantly reduce the amount of water being heated by electricity; and
• Up to 15 free energy efficient compact fluorescent light globes like the ones given away in the Big Light Switch.
Mr Lawlor said the ClimateSmart Home Service would be offered throughout Queensland to all properties connected to the energy grid.
“By providing this service we hope to encourage greater household energy reductions.
“I am confident that the community will embrace this new home-based program and commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions around the home.
“ I encourage eligible households to register for the service - it’s a great way to save the environment and put money back into the pockets of Queenslanders,” he said.
