Asked on 19 May 2010

MRS KIERNAN ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND FAIR TRADING (MR LAWLOR) —

QUESTION:

Will the Minister provide an update on the consultation process to country racing associations in relation to the amalgamation of the three racing codes?

ANSWER:

I thank the member for the question and for her continued interest in Country Racing.

I wish to advise that detailed consultation regarding the Bill was undertaken with racing control body executives and senior officers, and the Queensland Country Racing Committee during the period December 2009 to May 2010.

On 22 April 2010, members of the Country Racing Committee, comprising representatives from Country Racing Associations, who represent country race clubs in Queensland, were briefed on the new arrangements by Queensland Racing. The Country Racing Committee supported the new arrangements.

I have met with a wide range of industry stakeholders and interested persons on the proposed amendments to the legislation formally and informally since the proposed changes were announced in December 2009. Further, I have also met with representatives from the three codes of racing on a range of matters contained in the amendments to the legislation.

Ongoing consultation with the Country Racing Associations and the Country Racing Committee, that will be established under the constitution of Racing Queensland Limited rather than the Racing Act, will be undertaken by Racing Queensland Limited as a result of the Bill being passed.
