Malaysia Airlines’ decision to provide two extra flights per week into Brisbane from Kuala Lumpur will help boost the number of Malaysian visitors to Queensland, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said.
Mr Lawlor said the reinstated direct flights launched on the weekend were great news for Brisbane and the Queensland tourism industry.
“The two flights will add to Malaysia Airlines’ five per week services to Brisbane via Sydney,” Mr Lawlor said.
“The non-stop services will use Boeing 777s and add 564 weekly seats into Queensland in addition to the 705 already provided via Sydney.
“I am advised that Malaysia Airlines is further reviewing services into Brisbane and hopes to introduce additional non-stop flights later this year.
“Malaysia Airlines’ expansive network means visitors from many of Queensland’s key international source markets as well as Malaysia can travel to Brisbane and Queensland more easily.
“Due to an agreement between Malaysia Airlines and Virgin Blue, passengers from Malaysia Airlines can seamlessly transfer onto Virgin Blue flights to other key tourism destinations such as Tropical North Queensland and the Whitsundays.
“The flights are ideally timed, bringing in holidaymakers at the start of the weekend, while their non-stop nature reduces travel time and acts as an extra enticement for Malaysian holidaymakers to visit Queensland.
“Malaysia is an important international source market for Queensland with 41,000 Malaysian visitors coming to Queensland in 2009.”
