Fair Trading Minister Peter Lawlor has urged consumers to be prepared while shopping at this season’s stocktake sales to avoid blowing the budget.
Mr Lawlor said sales could be an excellent way to pick up much-needed items for a cheaper price.
“However, you can take the joy out of a good deal if you spend more than you can afford,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Sales hype can cause some consumers to fall into debt, and I recommend that you work out a budget at home to avoid overspending or making the wrong decisions about purchases.
“Remember, just because something is on sale it doesn't mean you have to buy it.
“Think about what you really need and ensure you have the money to afford it.
“Ask yourself if you really need it and consider what else the money could go towards, such as your car or mortgage repayments.”
Mr Lawlor said it was important for consumers to know and understand their refund rights and responsibilities, particularly while shopping during the sales season.
“All consumers have the right to ask for a refund, even if the goods are on special,” he said.
“However, this only applies when the goods have a fault that you could not have known about at the time of purchase, or they are not the same as the description provided by the salesperson or advertisement.
“You can also request a refund if the product does not match the sample you were shown at the time of purchase or does not do the job that was intended for.
“You are not entitled to a refund if you change your mind, find the same item cheaper elsewhere or if you bought a gift the receiver does not want or need.
“Some businesses may offer refunds in some of these circumstances as a sign of goodwill, but they aren’t required to by law.”
