Geotechnical investigation works for the eagerly awaited Gold Coast Rapid Transit project have begun along the 13-kilometre, Stage One corridor from Griffith University to Broadbeach. Member for Southport Peter Lawlor today visited the site of the proposed Gold Coast University Hospital Station on Parklands Drive, Southport, where two drilling crews from Varsity Lakes-based firm Parsons Brinckerhoff are working.
“The results of these investigations will allow the detailed design work for the project’s Early and Enabling works program to progress,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Geotechnical investigations will consider the physical make-up of soil, rock and underground water to help design earthworks and foundations for construction along the corridor.”
Construction of the Gold Coast University Hospital Station shell is due to commence in the next few months.
“Modelling by the project estimates by 2016 there will be more than 10,000 passenger movements per day at the Gold Coast University Hospital Station.
“As they move along the corridor over the next couple of months the two drilling crews will signal to Gold Coasters that work on Queensland’s first light rail project is gathering pace.
“As part of the Early and Enabling Works program, the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project will be going out to market over the coming months for a range of services, including the relocation of public utilities.
“These services are vital to ensuring we can deliver this much-needed project in the most efficient way possible,” Mr Lawlor said.
Information about the progress of the geotechnical crews is available at the project website - www.goldcoastrapidtransit.qld.gov.au.” Last changed: Feb 26 2010 at 11:35 AM
