The wheels are in motion for the $126 million upgrade to Labrador–Carrara Road (Olsen Avenue) with the first stage of construction underway this week. Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the $10 million contract for stage one of the works had been awarded to Moggill Constructions. “It’s an important project. It will support traffic around the new Gold Coast University Hospital and Knowledge Precinct. Motorists will have direct access from Olsen Avenue to the Gold Coast University Hospital,” Mr Wallace said. Stage one of works will include upgrades to a 1.1 kilometre of Olsen Avenue to six lanes and a new intersection at Hospital Boulevard. The Melia Court to Parklands Drive section of Olsen Avenue is being widened to six lanes, a new access to the hospital will be built, and the Olsen Avenue and Parklands Drive intersection will also be upgraded. “It’s about planning for and managing growth in our fast-growing region. It means jobs for around 80 workers and it means a safer and more secure road network for motorists,” Mr Lawlor said. “It’s important work too. Emergency vehicles will have better access to the new Gold Coast University Hospital,” he said. Mr Wallace said early works started in November last year to relocate water, power and telecommunication services. “The first phase of construction will concentrate on the new Hospital Boulevard intersection on Olsen Avenue, which needs to be completed by September to support construction of the new hospital. “The second phase will involve upgrading the existing intersection at Olsen Avenue, Parklands Drive and Wintergreen Drive.” Mr Wallace urged motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to take extra care around the road work zone.
