FSG Australia will assist 30 people with disabilities to improve their literacy and numeracy skills and increase their opportunities to work, take on further training and become more involved in the community.

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Economic Development Jan Jarratt and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the training project, Community Skills, would receive $32,640 from the State Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

“Language, literacy and numeracy skills are very important in daily life as well as the workplace,” Ms Jarratt said.

“The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will provide $2 million for the Community Literacy Program in 2009/10 to assist people who are being held back because of their reading and writing skills.”

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said FSG Australia has been working with people with disabilities for the past 30 years.
“This is a wonderful organisation and the variety of support they provide to individuals with disabilities and their families is very important,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The Gold Coast Institute of TAFE is supporting this project which will deliver the Course in Adult Literacy and Numeracy and it is great to see everyone working together on this project.”

FSG Australia Adult Disability Services Manager Kim West said three groups of 10 people would be recruited to the Community Skills project.

“The training will be held one day a week for three hours over 43 weeks at our Southport and Robina offices,” Ms West said.
“After an assessment we will develop a learning plan for each participant to improve the skill areas they need to work on.”

During 2009/10 the Queensland Government will invest $101 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 21,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
