Member for Southport Peter Lawlor called on local residents to get involved and show their support for National Close the Gap Day on Thursday 25 March. “National Close the Gap Day was founded in 2006 when more than 40 national organisations joined forces to create a major awareness raising campaign to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Mr Lawlor said. “Everyone has a role to play and residents can get involved by hosting an event. “It can be as straight forward as a morning tea which can help raise awareness in your workplace or neighbourhood. “Information on hosting an event is available on the Oxfam website. The organisation will also supply a range of resources including a copy of the Close the Gap pledge to sign, bumper stickers, wrist bands and other materials.” Mr Lawlor said communities throughout the State were showing their support fro National Close the Gap Day. At New Mapoon, the remote Indigenous school is hosting activities and video presentations while Bond University on the Gold Coast will hold a pledge signing barbeque and video event. “If people are unable to take part in an event in the Southport area people can pledge support to the Close the Gap campaign on Oxfam’s website.” Further information on attending a Closing the Gap event is available at www.oxfam.org.au/act/events/close-the-gap-day/attend.
