Asked on 24 March 2010 MR WENDT ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND FAIR TRADING (MR LAWLOR) — QUESTION: Will the Minister outline the benefits of Fair Trading’s ‘Get Out There’ websites? ANSWER: The Office of Fair Trading’s Get out there website (www.getoutthere.qld.gov.au) is a terrific source of information, raising awareness of consumer rights and financial issues that affect Queensland’s youth. The website, which includes information from agencies across the Queensland Government, features practical tips for school leavers on a wide variety of topics including buying a car, moving out of home, study options, getting a job, staying healthy and enrolling to vote. In particular, Get out there presents important consumer protection information to young Queenslanders in the online medium, so they can quickly and easily access the information they need. Young people need to know and understand their rights and responsibilities as consumers. This website provides that information in a format that appeals to younger consumers. Launched in 2008, the website replaced a hard copy publication. The conversion of the resource to a website realised several benefits, including considerable ongoing monetary savings. The website also has the potential to reach many more people than its hard copy predecessor, and has the advantage of allowing almost instant updates which is vital for publicising important consumer alerts. The success of Get out there has been proven with more than 74,000 people visiting the site since its launch. Those visitors have viewed more than 420,000 pages of information. I encourage all Queensland youth to log onto the Get out there website and start making smart consumer choices. Last changed: Jul 22 2010 at 11:48 AM
