As part of the Bligh Government’s commitment to stop glassings and alcohol fuelled violence, a new anti-glassing campaign is being launched today targeting Gold Coast patrons.
Minister responsible for liquor licensing, Peter Lawlor, said the targeted campaign will run in the peak celebration season from 10 November 2009 to 2 January 2010 and will highlight the consequences of glassing for both perpetrator and victim.
“The Queensland Government has worked in partnership with industry and taken significant measures to increase security and safety in licensed premises,” Mr Lawlor said.
“However, it is apparent that for conditions on licensed premises to be effective, patrons must be educated about responsible behaviour.
“This new targeted campaign will consist of radio and press advertisements in the Gold Coast region timed to deal with Schoolies and the festive season.
“The glassing incidences are very high on the Gold Coast so it makes sense that we would start a campaign here.”
Mr Lawlor said the advertisements for this campaign depict the hard hitting reality and devastating impact a glassing incident can have on young lives.
“I hope the campaign will encourage young people to be responsible and walk away from violent situations.
“While there is a Parliamentary Inquiry underway, the Government needs to be proactive in raising awareness of the consequences for both victims and perpetrators.
“The results of the Parliamentary Inquiry will, however, inform the Government’s direction for possible future campaigns regarding alcohol related violence.
“The Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation recognises the collaborative efforts of licensees and police in addressing the safe and responsible provision of alcohol and will continue to work with them to encourage responsible patron behaviour,” he said. Last changed: Nov 10 2009 at 3:39 PM
