Member for Southport Peter Lawlor has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent announcement of extra funds for school infrastructure. “This extra money for school facilities will greatly complement the Bligh Government’s record investment of more than $520 million in capital works for schools this financial year,” Mr Lawlor said. “I know local principals and P&Cs are delighted that this Federal funding has also become available to help ensure Queensland schools have some of the most modern and up-to-date facilities in Australia.
“Queensland schools will share in around $14.7 billion from the Federal Government’s economic package for new building projects that will require the active involvement of the State government.
"The Bligh Government is determined to make sure every single dollar of this package gets to the front line and creates jobs in Queensland as quickly as possible.
"It's essential we see this package go forward, to workers, to schools, to building companies and communities that need these jobs and to get them there as quickly as possible.
"I will be lobbying strongly for schools in my electorate to receive their fair share of funding and have already begun contacting principals to assess their needs.”
Education Minister Rod Welford has urged school principals to draw up a list of priorities and provide it to their local member. “This is a great opportunity for schools to get in a ‘wish list’ of building projects for their schools,” he said.
“The Bligh Government wants to ensure our schools offer 21st century learning environments with the latest technology available to all students.
“These extra projects will be a great addition to the initiatives we are undertaking, such as the $1 billion State Schools of Tomorrow program.
“Our Q2 vision for Queensland in 2020 is to ensure we are delivering world class education and training. These projects will help us make that happen."
