Member for Southport Peter Lawlor wants local organisations to apply for funding to support their Seniors Week activities next year. Mr Lawlor said a funding pool of $125,000 was up for grabs. Seniors Week 2010 will be celebrated from Saturday 14 August to Sunday 22 August.
“I encourage local groups and organisations to get in early. Grants of up to $5,000 are available to support planned Seniors Week activities next year,” he said.
Seniors Week celebrations can include excursions, concerts, workshops – anything that promotes the positive role seniors play in our everyday life.
“Many seniors are volunteers who give up their time, skills and experience to help others. It comes down to old-fashioned goodness and so many of our senior volunteers have it in abundance. “Around one third of Queenslanders aged over sixty are volunteers. They give up their time, skills and experience to help others.
“Seniors Week is an opportunity to give something back to seniors in our community. It can be our way of saying ‘thank you’ to seniors and to recognise the important contribution they make in our local community,” he said.
For an information pack, visit www.seniors.qld.gov.au or phone 1300 135 500. Applications for grants close on Monday 14 December, 2009.
Mr Lawlor is also reminding seniors to contact him/her to get their feedback on the new seniors strategy and action plan.
“We want to hear their views and ideas on issues such as health, housing, transport and other issues that matter to them,” he/she said.
The Seniors Discussion Paper is open for consultation until 4 December. To get a copy, visit www.seniors.qld.gov.au or phone 1800 051 978.
Mr Lawlor said the Bligh Government’s support for seniors is at the very core of the Toward Q2 goal of creating a fairer, more caring Queensland.
