Air access from the Gold Coast’s largest international source market – New Zealand – will increase by 54 percent from today with Jetstar’s inaugural return flight to Auckland, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said.
“From today Jetstar will be running daily return flights between Auckland and New Zealand increasing access from Auckland to the Gold coast by 87 percent,” he said.
“Jetstar now provides more flights between Auckland and the Gold Coast than any other carrier, with Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue connecting the cities five and four times per week, respectively.
“These new flights will provide an additional 1239 seats a week from Auckland to the Gold Coast greatly improving access to the Gold Coast and also connecting to other Queensland destinations.”
Mr Lawlor said Auckland was Jetstar’s fourth international destination now connected with the Gold Coast after Tokyo, Osaka and Christchurch.
“Queensland shares a prosperous partnership with Jetstar, which is further strengthened today by this new service,” he said.
“International tourism is a key economic driver for Queensland and maintaining and growing air access is critical.
“New Zealanders account for 27 percent of all international visitors to the Gold Coast, with 211,000 New Zealander visiting the Gold Coast in 2008.
“These visitors provided support for approximately 2900 Queensland jobs, so sustaining and improving access to the region is paramount.
“We are committed to generating interest from international holiday-makers and will do everything possible to maximise the benefits for Queensland.” Last changed: Oct 06 2009 at 2:18 PM
