Peter Lawlor Member for Southport said today it should come as no surprise to Gold Coast residents that the leader of the National Party Lawrence Springborg considers the redevelopment of Carrara ‘a waste of money’.
“The National Party thinks that any money spent on the Gold Coast is a waste” Mr Lawlor said. “That’s why it took a Labor Government to build a Convention Centre in the biggest tourist destination in Australia, “It took a Labor Government to build Skilled Stadium where the Titans play and which is also suitable for Rugby Union and soccer.” He also highlighted the National Party already has a history of taking the Gold Coast for granted. “A Labor Government had to rebuild the rail line from Brisbane to the Gold Coast after the National Party ripped up the original line and sold off the land corridor.” Mr Lawlor said. “And the Bligh Government is now building the new hospital at Parklands which at a cost of $1.55b is the largest health infrastructure project in Australia.” “The new hospital and upgrade of Carrara stadium shows the Bligh Government’s commitment of ensuring jobs for the residents of the Gold Coast during these hard economic times, “Lawrence Springborg plans only to cut those jobs and continue in a great National Party tradition of taking the Gold Coast for granted.”
