Local school to receive extra support

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor welcomed the joint Federal and State Government announcement that will see a further 40 Queensland schools receive extra support to boost literacy and numeracy standards.

Mr Lawlor said schools were chosen based on data supplied on the new My School website which identified an extra number that were performing below or substantially below both the national average and the average for similar schools.

“The good news is that, because of My School, we have identified schools that need an extra helping hand and they will now be getting even more support,” he said.

“I am pleased to acknowledge that Southport State High School will be one of the 40 that will receive an additional $4 million as part of the Smarter School National Partnership on Literacy and Numeracy.

“The Bligh Government has already made significant investment in education reforms across the state aimed at lifting standards and boosting literacy and numeracy results.

“We want to give kids a flying start into school and the support they need to achieve throughout, which is why our government has invested in Turnaround Teams, Literacy and Numeracy coaches and Summer Schools to help our children.
“These are just some of the innovative strategies we are funding to make the future of education in Queensland even brighter.”

Mr Lawlor said the Bligh Government had also launched the A Flying Start for Queensland Children Green Paper which will promote discussion about the direction of education in the state.

“We want parents reading to their children from an early age, a volunteer army of Ready Readers heading into our schools and we want to know what you think about moving Year 7 from primary school to secondary school,” he said.
“Across the board, this Government is a leading the way in education reform and with your help in public consultations, we can create an even better future for our children.”

The $450 million National Partnership on literacy and numeracy is targeted at raising school performance standards in the core areas above minimum benchmarks.

The programs deliver on the spot help including literacy and numeracy specialist teachers in the classroom, literacy and numeracy coaches assisting teachers to improve their teaching skills and additional teacher’s aides to provide support for teachers.
