More than 200,000 Queenslanders walked across the new Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge before it was opened to traffic and now they have an opportunity to receive a special certificate to mark the occasion. Member for Southport Peter Lawlor is encouraging bridge walkers to call into their electorate office or to contact them for their very own memorabilia to mark the historic milestone.
“We want walkers who helped celebrate the completion of the engineering marvel to have a keepsake of the event,” Mr Lawlor said.
They can call into my office at 24 Musgrave Avenue Chirn Park or email me at Southport@parliament.qld.gov.au for their very own ‘I walked the bridge’ certificate signed by Premier Anna Bligh and Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace.
“People who want to relive the experience will soon have access to a new pedestrian walkway and cycle way on the bridge, complete with dedicated viewing platforms that offer stunning views of Moreton Bay,” he/she said.
Mr Lawlor said the new Sir Leo Hielslcher Bridge was part of the Bligh Government’s massive $2.5 billion investment in the Gateway corridor.
“Four southbound lanes on the new bridge are now open to traffic and we’ll be opening more lanes progressively as work is completed.”
“Motorists will ultimately have 12 lanes across the river – six northbound and six southbound. All 12 lanes will be open by the end of the year, six months ahead of schedule,” he said.
