Gold Coast business leaders have an opportunity this week to meet the new Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor.
Mr Lawlor will make his first key address to business at the Gold Coast Institute of Business Leaders Luncheon at Crowne Plaza on Wednesday 29 April.
“As Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, including responsibilities for racing, gaming and liquor licensing, my new role is closely aligned with Gold Coast priorities,” Mr Lawlor said.
“In this time of global economic turmoil it’s especially important for me to build a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with local business leaders.
“Many already know me from my work as local member but now I have an opportunity to really go in to bat for the Gold Coast as well as other regions.”
Mr Lawlor said that Gold Coast was one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, with a population of 455,000 and predicted to grow by 13.6% by 2011.
He added that tourism, racing and gaming were critical industries for the region, along with the marine sector.
“The State Government’s single most important priority is job creation,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Tourism alone accounts for more than 28,000 jobs on the Coast and I am keen to hear what ideas local operators have to strengthen and diversify their industry, along with suggestions on how we can help.
“Queensland’s flair for innovation is part of what makes us such a great State and now more than ever our Government and our business leaders need to think outside the square.”
The Institute of Business Leaders Luncheon with Minister Lawlor is at 12noon, Wednesday 29 April at the Crowne Plaza. The cost is $88.00.
