More than 900 Gold Coast jobs will be lost if Lawrence Springborg is elected Premier this Saturday. Local ALP Members and Labor candidates today launched the Gold Coast ‘Jobs Not Cuts’ truck, a reminder to the region’s voters of what Mr Springborg’s plan to cut $1 billion out of the State budget would achieve. “The Jobs Not Cuts truck will tour the streets of the Gold Coast with a clear message: a vote for Lawrence Springborg means job cuts,” Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said. “The last thing we need is Mr Springborg’s plan to lose more than 900 public sector jobs here on the Gold Coast over the next 12 months and the accompanying cutback in services.”
Member for Mudgeeraba Di Reilly said Lawrence Springborg had failed to even recognise the global financial crisis. “If he can’t understand the problem, how can he hope to find a solution?” she said. “In the midst of a global recession that’s affecting every pocket of Queensland, cutting services and slashing jobs is not the answer. Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith, said: “There is simply no way possible Lawrence Springborg can cut $1 billion out of the State budget without cutting jobs and services in the Gold Coast region.”
Member for Broadwater, Peta-Kay Croft, said the Bligh Labor Government had a plan to lead Queensland out of the crisis. “A Bligh Labor Government is committed to jobs, not job cuts,” Ms Croft said. Member for Gaven, Phil Gray said: “We know times are tough, that’s why we’re committed to doing everything possible to create and support jobs. “We have made unemployment public enemy number one and we’ll keep on fighting it, not throw in the towel and add to the problem like Lawrence Springborg.”
