The Office of Fair Trading has removed three toys, including a Transformer figurine, from Brisbane Exhibition showbags after testing found they contained excessive amounts of lead.

Minister for Fair Trading Peter Lawlor said the toys were discovered during annual Ekka showbag inspections by product safety officers.

“The toys where tested in accordance with safety standards and where found to contain higher than the permissible levels of lead.

“The three products are a transformer figurine, toy hummer cars and an action space shuttle and all the products have been removed form the showbags.

“No other concerns were identified during the annual showbag check by the Office of Fair Trading. However, product safety officers will also be out and about during the Ekka conducting spot checks on showbags and other products on sale.”

Mr Lawlor said parents also had an important role to play in making sure showbag toys were safe for children to play with.

5 point showbag survival guide

1. Only buy a showbags suitable for the age of the child

The bags are well labelled with age suitability. Any toy or novelty that fits into a 35mm film canister (or about the size of ping pong ball is simply too small for children under three because they can choke on them).

2. Take time to compare value

There are more than 300 showbags available and some are better value than others.

3. It’s OK to say ‘No’

Do not feel pressured into a buying frenzy. If you go to the show early it is less crowded and you will be more able to shop around and make the best choice.

4. Have a budget (and stick to it)

The RNA is a good time to teach kids about budgeting.

5. Report any safety problems

Report concerns to Product Safety Unit at the Office of Fair Trading on 13 13 04.
