The Gold Coast Table Tennis Association is certain to produce even more national champions, following the official opening of a new $400,000 extension to its centre at Molendinar.

State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Bligh Government contributed $171,990 in funding towards construction.

“The new section has added a further 500 square metres, doubling the size of the centre, and allowing the Association to host national and international events,” Mr Lawlor said.

“This will help the Association produce even more champion players and increase the profile of the sport on the Coast.

“Club members already boast Australian champions currently representing Australia at national and international competitions.
“I can only just imagine how this new extension will further the sporting careers of our up-and-coming table tennis players.”

Sport Minister Phil Reeves hoped the new extension will encourage more people to take up table tennis.

“The Bligh Government is committed to developing more sporting opportunities for Queenslanders,” Mr Reeves said.

"Regular physical activity is essential to good health and our investment in sport and recreation is a down payment on better facilities and well-supported grassroots organisations to encourage Queenslanders to get out and get active,” he said.

“Building first-class sporting facilities is part of the Government’s commitment to its Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland initiative to help Queenslanders become the healthiest people in Australia.

“In the recent State Budget, the Bligh Government reaffirmed this commitment to sport and recreation by providing $159 million for facilities and programs.

“This funding will create jobs, build infrastructure and get more people active and involved in sport and recreation.
"No other State or Territory invests more funding in sport and recreation than Queensland."

The Association committed $260,000 and Gold Coast City Council $30,000 towards the project.
