The 2009 Queensland Tourism Awards, presented by Queensland Airports Limited, will be held on the Gold Coast in November and the event has been refashioned to be easy on the pocket, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said.

Mr Lawlor said it was more important than ever that the Queensland tourism industry celebrated its strengths through events such as the Queensland Tourism Awards.

“This year, Tourism Queensland has taken a different approach to staging the Queensland Tourism Awards,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The format of the function had been streamlined to a be particularly cost-effective during these challenging economic times but it will be no less glamorous in the process.

“The Queensland Tourism Awards are about acknowledging and rewarding businesses in Queensland’s tourism industry for their innovation, achievements and ongoing hard work.”

Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said nominations for the awards were open until 28 August.

“The Queensland Tourism Awards is the premier event for the state’s tourism industry, recognising the achievements of tourism businesses across 29 categories,” Mr Hayes said.

“Tickets will go on sale in September for the event, which will be held at Conrad Jupiters at the Gold Coast on 13 November.

“The awards are anticipated to sell out as usual, and we are expecting around 800 attendees.

“This is the 27th year that Tourism Queensland has organised the awards, once again with Queensland Airports Limited as platinum sponsor, and in partnership with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.”

Queensland Airports Limited Managing Director, Dennis Chant said the headline partnership with the Queensland Tourism Awards remained a perfect fit for the state’s leading airport investment company, which owned and operated Gold Coast, Townsville and Mount Isa airports.

“With more than six million passengers passing through our three airports last year, Queensland Airports is a key driver for growing tourism to regional communities,” Mr Chant said.

“We look forward to celebrating the best of the best through the Queensland Tourism Awards this year.”
Mr Lawlor said visitors to Queensland spent more than $18.7 billion in the 12 months to March 2009 and directly supported 119,000 Queensland jobs and a further 80,000 indirectly.

“Tourism is a key economic driver for Queensland and it is important we recognise the industry achievements,” he said.
