New recycling system good news for Queensland

Queensland Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor has praised Gold Coast’s Wet’n’Wild theme park for introducing new recycling systems on site.

Launching the scheme today, Mr Lawlor said that with over one million visitors every year, Wet’n’Wild represented a great opportunity to reuse hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles, cans and other recyclables.

“It’s essential that visitors, whether holidaying locally or from overseas, do their part to leave our local community in as pristine a state as they found it.

“It’s also particularly pleasing Wet’n’Wild has adopted the State Government’s Public Place Recycling Scheme, which has been so successful in Warner Village Theme Parks’ other venues, Movie World and Sea World.

“Since we began the program in January 2008, Public Place Recycling has rolled out 3,500 recycling bins in 90 public venues around Queensland.

“As a result, more and more Queenslanders are choosing to ‘do the right thing and use the right bin’ away from home.

“Nowhere is this more evident than in our large sports arenas like Suncorp Stadium, which set the record as Brisbane’s most successful recycling venue last year.

Member for Albert Margaret Keech said she was glad to see Wet’n’Wild Water World had decided to be a part of this great initiative.

Mrs Keech said that the Queensland government was constantly striving to protect the state’s unique lifestyle and environment.

“Any win for the environment means a nicer local community for us to enjoy as well.

‘’Queenslanders are annually recycling 269,000 tonnes of waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill.’’

Coca Cola Amatil has pledged to donate a percentage of each bottle up to $10,000 to Surf Lifesaving Queensland.

“It’s a very worthy cause which will only help give visitors the impetus to be a part of this great program,’’ Mrs Keech said.
