New Tiger Airways services welcome news for Gold Coast

The launch of new Tiger Airways’ Sydney - Gold Coast services from December was welcome news for the Gold Coast’s tourism industry, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor said Tiger Airways would be the third airline to fly the Sydney - Gold Coast route, in addition to existing services by Virgin Blue and Jetstar.

“I congratulate Tiger Airways on this decision which will make travel to one of our state’s major tourism destinations even more convenient, for both holiday and business visitors,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The new daily return services will add 1,260 weekly seats in capacity to the Gold Coast and increase Tiger's seat capacity into the region by 25 percent.

“The flights starting in December are also a great addition to travel options for Christmas travellers during the busy summer holiday period.

“In these tough economic times, it is pleasing to see a low-cost carrier like Tiger Airways recognising the value of increased services to a key Queensland region such as the Gold Coast.”

Mr Lawlor said the Gold Coast welcomed more than half a million Sydney visitors in the year ending June 2009.

“The latest domestic figures show that 554,000 Sydneysiders visited the Gold Coast in the last financial year,” he said.

“The addition of these flights means that from December Tiger Airways will offer five flights per day into the Gold Coast from three destinations, Adelaide, Melbourne and now Sydney.

“New additional flights such as these can give an even further boost to visitor numbers to the Gold Coast.”

The new services will operate from 15 December 2009.
