Parents have been warned to be vigilant while using prams and strollers following the product safety recall of a series of strollers in the United States.
Manufacturer Maclaren announced the recall of nine styles of umbrella-type strollers in the United States earlier today. The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a hazard to the child when the stroller is being unfolded or opened.
The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.
Minister for Fair Trading Peter Lawlor said the voluntary recall in the United States had prompted some concerns in Australia which are currently being followed up at the national level.
“A mandatory safety standard for prams and strollers was introduced on 1 July 2008. The standard requires that prams and strollers sold in Australia have a number of safety features, including a warning label, tether strap and parking brake.
“Whilst the current situation in Australia with Maclaren strollers is being investigated consumers need to take some simple precautions when opening and closing any type of stroller to avoid children’s finger being trapped.
“Most importantly ensure a child is far enough away so that their fingers do not get trapped in the scissor mechanism of the folding parts.
“Also make sure the stroller parts are fully locked in before placing the child in the stroller and always use the harness to restrain the child.
“If a tether is fitted then this should be used at all times.
“Never overload strollers with shopping bags on the handles because this could tip them backwards and always use the brake when stationary.”
Mr Lawlor said if parents or caregivers had any safety issues with Maclaren strollers they should contact the OFT Product Safety Unit urgently on 3008 5983 or 13 13 04. Last changed: Nov 10 2009 at 3:39 PM
