The director of Petroleum Maintenance and Installation Services Pty Ltd has been fined $9000 in the Gympie Magistrates Court for illegally testing and certifying fuel dispensers.
Minister for Fair Trading Peter Lawlor said company director Bruce Robert Collett had certified fuel dispensers as being fit for trade use when he did not hold the required licence.
“Fair Trading inspectors were carrying out routine inspections at sites in Gympie and Kilkivan in 2008 where they discovered fuel dispensers sealed with certification marks which were found to be delivering short measure and operating with faulty displays,” Mr Lawlor said.
“The legislation requiring accuracy of fuel dispensers is to protect consumers from being ripped off, particularly given the difficult economic environment.
“The significant financial punishment should serve as a reminder to those in the fuel industry of the need for consumers to have faith in the certification system and a deterrent to those operating without a suitable licence.”
The maximum penalties for breaches of the Trade Measurement Act 1990 are fines of $20,000 for an individual and $100,000 for a company.
