The Bligh Government is finalising plans on a $130 million upgrade of  Labrador–Carrara Road ( Olsen Avenue ) to support the development of the new Gold Coast University Hospital. Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the Gold Coast University Hospital was a State Government Priority Infrastructure Project, which involved many government departments working together to deliver this major project.

“This is an important project for the Gold Coast and we’re working to ensure it is delivered as smoothly as possible for the local community,” Mr Wallace said.

“We will upgrade Olsen Avenue to six lanes, build a new access to the hospital and upgrade the existing intersection at Olsen Avenue, Parklands Driveand Wintergreen Drive.

“Early works including the relocation of water, power and telecommunications services will start later this year in preparation for the road upgrade.

“These road upgrades will be done in phases with the construction of a new signalised intersection at Olsen Avenue and Hospital Boulevardstarting in early 2010.”

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the road upgrade was an important part of the development of the new Gold Coast University Hospital.

“The second phase of the road construction will involve upgrading the existing intersection at Olsen Avenue, Parklands Driveand Wintergreen Drive,” Mr Lawlor said.

“This work will include dedicated on-road cycle lanes, signalised pedestrian crossing, widening Olsen Avenue and intersection and route lighting.

“A newsletter is being distributed to the local community outlining these future road upgrades to keep people informed of the changes they’ll soon be seeing around here.

“The newsletter will include a detailed map so people are aware of where this work will be happening.”
