 Queensland general election - March 21, 2009

Premier Anna Bligh MP has called a general election to be held on 21 March 2009.

I am your candidate for Southport. I have worked hard to represent the people of Southport on the issues that are important, such as protecting the Broadwater, improving our health care system and maintaining high standards in police and emergency services. If elected, I will continue to campaign on your behalf.

I am passionate about Southport, having lived in the electorate for more than 50 years, and passionate about securing it's future.

Please get out and vote on Saturday March 21. Voting is compulsory.

Protecting local jobs

Election 2009 >>

The global financial crisis has now turned into a global recession.  Here in Southport we are not immune from the effects of the economic downturn, particularly the impact on our local jobs.

The global recession is not of our making, but the Bligh Government is doing all we can to minimise the impact on Queensland jobs. Premier Anna Bligh has made protecting Queensland jobs her number one priority and will tackle rising unemployment through the following initiatives:

·      $17 billion building program  (largest in the country)
·      Jobs Squad
·      Safety-net for apprentices and trainees
·      Workers Assistance helpline  (1800 035 749)
·      Streamlining approvals for job-creating projects
·      $100 million for regional communities
·      Worker Assist Program
·      Rapid Response Flying Squad

These Bligh Government initiatives are complemented by the Prime Minister’s Nation Building and Jobs Plan.
The key components of Kevin Rudd’s stimulus package include targeted cash bonuses for eligible Australians and an infrastructure package for all our schools.

Every local primary school in the Southport electorate – state and private – has the opportunity to apply for the construction of a major new building such as a new library, hall or learning centre.

I will stay focused on protecting local jobs and improving facilities at schools in our community.
Anna Bligh and I have the experience to lead Queensland during the turbulent economic times ahead.
