President Di Hayson and Members of the Gold Coast Local Ambulance Committee Ladies and Gentlemen Suggested speaking points: · I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where we are now meeting.
· I am delighted to be here today to officially commission this Mercedes Sprinter 318 vehicle to the Southport Ambulance Station.
· This important occasion demonstrates the commitment of the Queensland Government to ensuring that top class emergency service facilities are available for the people of Queensland.
· This vehicle is an investment which will better equip Southport station to effectively meet the demands on its services to the Southport and surrounding areas.
· The Gold Coast is the sixth largest city in Australia, and is home to more than 490,000 people. Southport Ambulance Station is one of eight stations in the region that are committed to providing 24-hour, seven day a week pre-hospital care.
·Rapid population growth in Queensland has meant that many ambulance stations have recorded a significant increase in demand for their services in recent years and Southport is no different.
· There is no doubt that this Mercedes Sprinter 318 vehicle will be a major asset to the station. Valued at $180,000, it is fitted with the most-up-to-date equipment and is capable of responding in emergency conditions.
· This vehicle features the new state of the art Stryker stretcher and Stryker stair chair, which can safely support patients who weigh more than 200 kilograms.
· By utilising this piece of equipment the risk of injury to paramedics and patients is greatly reduced during extrication. The design and unique ‘track’ type wheels help take the weight of patients down stairs and enable more control of descent by the paramedics with minimal effort.
· The livery on the new vehicle is also highly visible in design to improve driver recognition when ambulances drive under emergency conditions and is in line with the latest international best practice for emergency vehicle safety.
· I would also like to take this opportunity to recognise the dedication and professionalism of the 47 staff members at Southport Station who last financial year responded to 13,328 emergency cases.
· All of your efforts greatly contribute to the smooth operation of this facility. · Thank you
