Queenslanders are being to encouraged to celebrate Home and Community Care Awareness Week (22-28 August) at a series of events around the State.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor said the Home and Community Care program provided services to thousands of older Queenslanders and people with a disability.

“The joint State-Commonwealth Home and Community Care provides basic maintenance and support services to aged people and those with disabilities and their carers,” Mr Lawlor said.

“It helps people to live independently in their own communities among family and friends, helping them with everyday tasks like mowing the lawn, preparing meals and housecleaning.

“The program also provides transport services and access to in-home health and therapy services.
“Home and Community Care Awareness Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the benefits of the program and increase awareness of and access to services.

“I want to encourage residents to take part in any local Home and Community Care Awareness events planned in their area.”

Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the last State Budget delivered a record $528.7 million for Home and Community Care services.  This is joint State Government and Commonwealth funding.

“The Home and Community Care program has transformed the lives of thousands of older Queenslanders and people with a disability across the State,” she said.

“It supports one of Queensland’s most iconic organisations, Meals on Wheels.

“With the Commonwealth, Queensland provides $5.4 million a year to help Meals on Wheels deliver more than two million meals in Queensland every year.

“Home and Community Care is about providing people with choice and independence, and fundamentally it’s about improving people’s quality of life.”
