“This investment will be used for building new facilities, because building means jobs,” he said.
“The funding package will be used by the industry to build the infrastructure it needs to compete in an international arena”.
“These funds will energise racing in Queensland, with legislation to create a new racing control body – Racing Queensland Limited – which integrates and streamlines operations.
“The new control body will have responsibility for the entire racing industry and combining three bodies – thoroughbred, harness and greyhounds – into one means the funding package will be used effectively on strategic priorities and superior outcomes for the entire industry.
“Racing is a strong employer – estimates put direct and indirect jobs at about 43,000 – but it is also vital for strong communities; especially in regional areas where race day is the most important get-together in the calendar.”
The new racing control body will also create a funding stream specifically targeted to assist small country clubs that have limited financial options.
“This helping hand for those smaller clubs experiencing financial difficulties has been funded to the tune of $900,000 over the next three years,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Priority for this funding will be bringing smaller racecourses up to the proper workplace health and safety standards.
“It’s no secret that some racecourses have become run down and are holding the industry back.
“Soon those days will be in the past and racing will be well on its way to a prosperous and healthy future.”
