Community groups in Southport will share in more than $134,000 in funding from the latest round of the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Treasurer Andrew Frasier and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced the grants of up to $30,000 each for seven community groups.
“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund helps grassroots community and not-for-profit groups deliver services to their local community,” Mr Frasier said.
“In the lead up to Christmas, these grants will provide a much-needed boost to these groups and their local communities.”
Peter Lawlor said the funding has arrived at the right time of the year.
“I have personally thrown my support behind each one of these groups in their application for funding,” Mr Lawlor said.
“For seven groups to get funding in one announcement is a record for Southport and it couldn’t have come at a better time upon entering the Christmas period,
“This will allow the volunteers down at Meals on Wheels to finally fix their air-conditioning units and for St. Vincent De Pauls to purchase forklifts for their clothing distribution centre.”
“So far I have seen $3.6 Million from the GCBF been distributed to community groups in the Southport area and that great feeling when notifying each group of a successful application never changes,” said Mr Lawlor
Mr Frasier said almost 700 Queensland community groups would share in a record $12 million in funding from the Fund’s 58th round. The record funding was due to a change in application closing dates.
“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund invests in community groups to enhance their ability to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities to Queenslanders in their local communities,” he explained. MORE
“In giving something back to the community, the grants recognise the excellent work of these groups and ensure that the whole State, on balance, derives tangible benefits from gambling revenue.”
The successful grant recipients in Southport are:
Hopewell Hospice Services Inc $28,918 Gold Coast Pistol Club Ltd $27,227 Musgrave Sports Club Inc $26,000 St Vincent De Paul $22,100 Mental Health Association (Qld) $14,545 Southport Meals On Wheels $13,122 Maltese Australian Gold Coast Association Inc $2,475
Following the 58th round of grant allocations, the Fund has provided over $390 million to more than 33,600 community projects since its inception. Funding is sourced from taxes collected on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.
Almost all not-for-profit groups in Queensland are eligible to apply, and applications from both large and small organisations are encouraged.
