More than 1.5 million Chinese will be able to tune in for a taste of Queensland after popular Hong Kong travel show Admiral’s Feast visited the Sunshine State at the weekend, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said.

Mr Lawlor said the cast and crew from Hong Kong’s prominent food and leisure program Admiral’s Feast were touring Queensland to taste the state’s finest produce.

“Hong Kong Celebrity Chef Wong Wing Chee, renowned as one of China’s top 10 chefs and three-time award winning Iron Chef, was in Australia to get a taste of the quintessential Queensland lifestyle and took the opportunity to cook with a range of prominent Queensland chefs,” Mr Lawlor said.

“Queensland is renowned both domestically and internationally for its fresh produce and this visit presents a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase a diverse range of culinary tourist experiences right across the state.

“Admiral’s Feast is a popular television program in Hong Kong and hosting well-known Chef Wong Wing Chee will enable Queensland to bring a slice of the state to his avid audience back home.”

Mr Lawlor said the chef’s Queensland tour included a visit to both coastal and inland Queensland destinations.

“The comprehensive itinerary included a visit to ginger, fudge and nougat factories, fresh seafood and produce markets, crab tours, a trip to a rum distillery, tropical fruit world, a farm visit, as well as countless visits to Queensland restaurants,” he said.

“After sampling organically grown Queensland produce Chef Wong Wing Chee will use the ingredients during his program to raise awareness for Queensland in the Hong Kong market.”

Mr Lawlor said in 2009 38,000 Hong Kong visitors travelled to Queensland and spent $79 million in the state.

“Queensland’s fresh seafood, organically grown produce and relaxed lifestyle are all sought-after holiday experiences for the greater China markets,” he said.

“Chinese visitors also love to interact with native Australian animals, enjoy our natural landscapes and take part in our beach culture.”
