Repair work reaps rewards

The Southport electorate will receive around $1.7 million for maintenance and repairs to social housing, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the funds were part of the Rudd Government’s Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.

“It’s a win for workers in the local building industry and it’s a win for people who need a roof over their head,” he said.

“We’ve got our sleeves rolled up and we’re ready to go.  We’ve fast-tracked the maintenance program so that we can start generating local jobs for workers in the building industry.

“They’ll be out there with their sleeves rolled up, fixing up homes and carrying out repairs for people who rely on social housing.

“The maintenance and repairs program comes at a time when jobs and job security are more important than ever before,” he said.

Mr Lawlor said today’s funding announcement was part of an $80 million maintenance and repair program to be rolled out across the state until June next year.

“It will include features to make life easier for elderly tenants or tenants with a disability, along with practical ways to give social housing dwellings more street appeal,” he said.

“It’s a win for the environment too.  We’re looking at roofing insulation, rainwater tanks, gas hot water systems and a solar trial at selected sites.”

Mr Lawlor said the Bligh Government had fast-tracked $40 million out of the program to be delivered around the state before the end of June this year.

“It’ll help kick-start local economies,” he said.

Queensland’s $1.3 billion share of the Rudd Government’s overall Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan will lead to 4,000 new homes being built across the state and thousands of jobs for workers in Queensland’s building industry.

“This is about protecting local jobs.  Not only that, there will be an immediate flow-on effect for suppliers, small businesses and the local economy,” he said.
