Show your true State of Origin colours via Facebook

Just one day remains for entries in the Tourism Queensland Facebook competition to design a State of Origin jersey.

‘Slatersgirl’, ‘Sunnysideup’, and ‘Quinsland’ are the most popular names of the 4,238 jerseys competing so far on Tourism Queensland’s Facebook page.

The most popular jersey will win two coveted tickets to the second State of Origin game at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday 16 June, plus return flights and transfers from the winner’s nearest Australian capital city or regional Queensland airport to Brisbane, one night’s accommodation and a personalised Queensland jersey to wear to the game.

Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said the Tourism Queensland initiative, which aimed to increase the Queensland Facebook fan base, had been a resounding success to date, with about 28,000 Facebook users clicking the ‘Like’ button on the page.

“Just over two weeks ago there were 15,000 fans of Queensland Facebook and now that’s jumped up to 28,000 due to this competition.

“It just goes to show Queenslanders’ passion for tourism and football go hand in hand.”

Tourism Queensland’s Facebook campaign is aimed at harnessing the passion people display for Queensland at this time of year and giving them a forum to customise their own Maroons jersey and proudly display it on their Facebook profile.

Then Facebook users who have created a jersey encourage their friends to vote for their favourite jersey designs. Any Facebook user can participate in the campaign and all jerseys created will be published in the ‘Hall of Fame’ on the Queensland Facebook page.

The design with the most votes as of 4pm (AEST) on Friday 11 June 2010 will win two sought-after tickets to the next State of Origin game in Brisbane on Wednesday, plus return flights and transfers from the winner’s nearest Australian capital city or regional Queensland airport to Brisbane, one night’s accommodation and a personalised Queensland jersey to wear to the game.

“This campaign is going gangbusters, but time is running out and fans should get their entries in before Friday,” Mr Lawlor said.

Mr Lawlor said the success of this campaign would pave the way for other online campaigns via the Queensland Facebook page, which was another way to promote Queensland to the domestic tourism market.

To make your own Queensland jersey log on to www.facebook.com/Queensland.

The competition is open to those 18 years old and over.
