MR STEVENS ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND FAIR TRADING (MR LAWLOR) —
QUESTION:
With reference to the visit of Sir David Attenborough and his intention to film his new documentary, ‘First Animals’ here in Queensland—
What financial incentives or payments did Tourism Queensland or any other government department give to Sir David Attenborough and his team to lure them here to Queensland?
ANSWER:
Sir David Attenborough travelled with his crew to Queensland in December 2009 to film his new documentary ‘First Animals’. Attenborough will front the documentary, which is expected to air this year on the BBC and Discovery Channel to an audience of several million viewers. The film is expected to be repeated for up to ten years in more than 40 countries worldwide, resulting in ongoing publicity for Queensland. Press and website coverage, as well as an accompanying book written by Attenborough will maximise the publicity of this opportunity.
Tourism Queensland financially supported the trip, with the aim of increasing the visibility of Queensland destinations and experiences in international markets. However no payments or incentives were given by Tourism Queensland or the Queensland Government to Sir David Attenborough or his team to encourage them to film in Queensland.
