Southport facility to help young school leavers with a disability

The Bligh Government has invested $500,000 into supporting young adults with a disability access post-school services on the Gold Coast.

Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the funding had been provided to the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland to move its Labrador operations to a purpose-built facility in Ridgeway Avenue, Southport.

“The completion of schooling presents challenges and opportunities for families as well as for the young person moving from being a student to becoming an adult,” Minister Palaszczuk said.

“Through the post-school services program, young people can explore vocational goals, pursue opportunities for work experience, build on existing relationships and recreational interests and participate in the life of their community.

“The program also supports families through this transition by providing information and involving them in planning for the young person’s future.”

The League’s current day facility in Labrador assists about 30 clients with post-school programs based on an individual’s abilities and goals.

“It offers mainly life skills development such as cooking, money management, volunteering, facilitating access to education and recreational activities.

“The new premises will enable the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland to provide more services to young people with a disability because there will be more space,” Minister Palaszczuk said.

Minister Palaszczuk said last year the League was approved for one-off funding of $500,000 to build a facility that was more appropriate and accessible and could cater for more young adults with a disability.

“Planning is well under way and the project is moving closer to the start of construction.”

The new purpose-built day facility would provide opportunities for skill and creativity development, raising nutritional awareness, improving fitness levels, computer skills and prevocational training.

The Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland receives a total of $2,384,314 in recurrent funding on the Gold Coast for post school services, adult lifestyle support, respite, general funding and developing sector capacity.

“I recently met service organisations at the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton and Toowoomba as part of our efforts to build a disability service system that best meets the needs of both providers and clients alike,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the new facilities, when completed would benefit people with a disability on the Gold Coast.

“I am confident that many people with a disability will benefit from the Bligh Government’s investment into this worthwhile project,” he said.

“The Cerebral Palsy League Queensland facilities are conveniently located near the shopping precinct, public transport and other community facilities,” Mr Lawlor said.
