Southport State School has been named runner up of Queensland's Let's get Physical Award at a ceremony at Parliament House today.

Southport State School has been named runner up of Queensland’s Let’s get Physical Award at a ceremony at Parliament House today.

Southport MP Peter Lawlor congratulated the Gold Coast school on its achievement in the annual Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland Awards.

“Well done to the school on being recognised for its planned physical education program which encompasses the Healthy Body = Healthy Mind philosophy,” Mr Lawlor said.

“A school vegetable garden grows green and healthy vegetables and fruit trees to supply classes and the school’s tuckshop.”

“The awards program allows school community members to enjoy the benefits that come from caring for themselves, their community and the natural environment,” Mr Lawlor said.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said creating a greener, healthier Queensland was part of the Bligh Government’s Toward Q2 vision.

“These awards recognise schools working towards that goal,” Mr Welford said.

“Our schools are playing an important part in driving us towards our targets for Tomorrow’s Queensland running innovative programs teaching students the importance of looking after the environment and looking after their own health,”

The winner of the Let’s get Physical Award in 2008 was Far North Queensland’s Djarragun College, which was recognised for its extensive sports curriculum involving links with sporting clubs and associations.

“The dedicated sports academy includes a riverside rainforest adventure-education centre offering activities such as canoeing, high-ropes, orienteering and abseiling,” Mr Welford said.

Next year award organisers are expecting an increased numbers of entrants as the State Government has announced $500,000 in prize money for the Healthiest School as part of the Healthiest Community Awards.
