The Queensland Government will provide more than $270,000 to upgrade Southport State High School’s tennis courts, State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said today. Mr Lawlor said Sports Minister Phil Reeves had recently confirmed the funding, which is being provided under the Queensland Government’s Major Facilities Program.
The funding would help provide additional opportunities for Southport residents to participate in sport and recreation, he said. “The $271,279 in funding will help Southport State High School upgrade the School’s four existing tennis courts to international standard,” Mr Lawlor said.
The Major Facilities Program provides financial assistance to organisations to develop and enhance sport and recreation infrastructure to meet community participation needs, support local, regional, state, national and international levels of training and competition and to attract and host key sporting events. “Without this funding program, it is often impossible for councils and other sport and recreation organisations to fund major sporting infrastructure,” Mr Lawlor said.
“We want Southport residents to develop a passion for physical activity at a young age so that they can carry it through into their adult life.” Mr Reeves said if people had good access to sporting facilities in their local communities, it made it easier for them to get involved in sport and recreation.
“We all know playing sport and getting active is one of the best ways to improve our quality of life, both physically and socially,” Mr Reeves said. “We wan to ensure Queenslanders have good access to sporting facilities in their local communities. It’s all part of the Bligh Government’s Toward Q2 goal of making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people.” Mr Reeves said the Major Facilities Program was a key element of the Queensland Government’s commitment to sporting infrastructure and facilities which will see more than $78 million in funding provided this financial year across the state; more than any other state or territory in the country.
