If elected, I will continue to campaign on your behalf.

On the 23rd February this year I attended a meeting of the Parkwood Arundel Residents Association. Also in attendance were local councillors Margaret Grummitt and John Wayne.
The two issues which were of most concern to the residents were the Suntown Tip and the Mike Hatcher Junior Motorcycle Club.
As I stated at the meeting both of these issues are the responsibility of the Gold Coast City Council and both Councillors gave a detailed explanation of their efforts to have the tip closed down and to have the motorcycle club relocated. They also indicated that they were having some difficulty in convincing the Council to honour the Council resolution of the 1st August 1997 which expressed its “strong determination to close the Suntown Tip by the year 2001 or earlier if practicably possible.” As I stated at the meeting both of these issues are the responsibility of the Gold Coast City Council and both Councillors gave a detailed explanation of their efforts to have the tip closed down and to have the motorcycle club relocated. It appears that since the lease for the motorcycle club expires on 30th June 2009 (notwithstanding that the Council appears to have canvassed the possibility of an extension with the club) they will have to find an alternate venue possibly with the assistance of their State body, Motorcycling Queensland.
Following the meeting and in order to support the two Councillors and exert some pressure on Council I discussed both issues with the Premier’s office and also with the office of the Minister for Sustainability & Climate Change.
Both these matters have now been referred to the Environmental Protection Agency for advice as to what steps may be taken to resolve the issues and to force the Council to honour its undertaking to the residents living in the vicinity of these two sites.
