Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor today celebrated the success of the inaugural nine-week-long Surfers Paradise Festival, alongside locals and tourists, with a “Great Aussie Barbecue”.

Mr Lawlor said the “Great Aussie Barbecue” was an all-day beachside celebration of food, music and fun on the world-famous Surfers Paradise Beach and was a great way to finish off the festival, which had been a resounding success.

“The Surfers Paradise Festival has transformed the beach, streets, parks, venues and eateries of Surfers Paradise into a cultural hub of activity over the past two months,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The festival has provided the perfect opportunity for young talent from across South East Queensland to showcase their creativity to Gold Coast locals and visitors through live performances, art displays, outdoor festivals, and insatiable foodie experiences.

“The big finale for the festival was today’s ‘Great Aussie Barbecue’, held at Eileen Peters Park, which treated visitors to live food demonstrations and taste tests of prime meats, seafood, vegetables and other quality local produce as well as barbecued delicacies from Korea, Greece, Japan, Mongolia and many other countries.

“Audiences also experienced Aussie tribute bands and artist performances, market stalls, an Aussie Bar, backyard cricket and a beach fireworks display to finish off.”

Mr Lawlor said following the success of the 2010 Surfers Paradise Festival, the event was already on the cards for 2011.

“The Gold Coast offers something for every visitor, from stunning beaches and surfing hot spots to friendly locals, amazing creative talent and beautiful cuisine.

“Given the fantastic turnout at this year’s inaugural festival, the event is no doubt set to become an annual attraction.

“In the year ending March 2010, the Gold Coast had over 3.9 million international and domestic visitors, who spent around $3.9 billion on trips to the region.

“It’s important that we capitalise on events such as the Surfers Paradise Festival to show the rest of Australia and the world what a great destination Surfers Paradise is all year round, and in the process entice more visitors to the region.”
